Once upon a traditional city

In Nizwa, it feels like stepping back in time. Surrounded by mountains and a lush palm oasis, this is a place where centuries-old traditions are still part of everyday life. Travel reports of travelers (even ‘overlanders’!) and merchants mentioning Nizwa are dating back to the 12th century.

The impressive Nizwa Fort, built in the 17th century, is beautifully preserved and offers a glimpse into the past. The museum inside is very interesting and educational. We loved learning about how creative the Omani where in defending the fort, for instance using hot date syrup. Just outside, in de streets around the fort, you’ll find the lively Nizwa Souq, where locals shop for daily goods alongside handcrafted items, spices, silver and weapons.
The ancient Falaj Daris irrigation system, now a UNESCO World Heritage site, is another reminder of how life has been sustained here for centuries.

The thing we loved most was the traditional goat market on Friday mornings. Farmers promoting their livestock by marching around with them in a circle of potential buyers. Goats, sheep and cows everywhere. The smell off the goats, the sounds of men negotiating prices and things happening wherever you look. Getting bored is impossible and we loved every minute walking around the market!

We slept in the middle of the city, on the parking lot located in the wadi next to the fort. This did lead to having to leave the place suddenly and quick when the rain started, which completely flooded the wadi in minutes. But other than that quite rare event we had a very quiet stay. Staying in the middle of the city let us experience every day live even more and the fort, souq and goatmarket are just around the corner at walking distance!

What makes Nizwa special is that it doesn’t feel staged for tourists. It’s a place where real life happens and as a traveler you are allowed to catch a glimpse of traditional Omani community live. And that’s exactly why we loved visiting this place! It is not just a visit but a beautiful experience.
