Showing our kids around Oman was a lifelong dream come true. Doing it in our home on wheels made it extra special. So… where do we go next?
Before we left, friends showed us pictures of their overlanding trip through Africa. Let’s just say it didn’t take much to convince us how amazing it is to drive across the continent. In the same week, we heard about a family crossing from Oman to Kenya… so that’s a possibility? And that’s how the next chapter was born.
The shipping part turns out to be quite a challenge because of the war. First there were no ships going at all, then prices went up quickly — and then even more. We looked into options to delay the crossing, but those were just as costly. So we decided to use the money to get to Kenya, despite the increased expenses.
This might be the biggest logistical challenge we have ever organized. For the truck, we’re working with a shipping agent who professionally supports overlanders going both ways. The truck will leave on a ship, inshallah, in about a week. Two days before departure, we have to drop it off at the harbor to be loaded (yikes!). We’ll rent a car and drive to Muscat over two days, because that’s much cheaper and easier with the cats than flying.
We’ll have a few days in Muscat to arrange the cats’ flight, which is a whole operation on its own. Luckily, we have agents helping us. The cats unfortunately have to enter Kenya as cargo, which means they’ll travel separately from us. We’re in the middle of arranging all the paperwork and bookings.
We’ll fly to Nairobi just in time before our visas expire and hopefully collect the cats the next day. From there, we can travel to Mombasa and wait for our home to arrive.
The hard part is making sure everything comes together at the right moment and way. So much is uncertain, and many of the bookings depend on each other. We’re trying to trust the process — and our agents. The kids see it as a big adventure. We might have to sell a few organs along the way.
If you would like to support our adventure you can help a lot by buying our book(Dutch) or become a member of Beyond the Pictures.
