The cabin
Time for the cabin a.k.a. the living room and dining room! This is a whole big project on itself. It starts with completely emptying the whole cabin. Benches, chairs but also side panels, flooring and ceiling. And then a very important step: We cut a whole through the wall of the cabin in the back and through our newely build living box, making a passage from the living box to the cabin. Next step is insulating everything. On the floor we use special noice canceling material. For the walls and ceiling we use armaflex, which you can cut in the right size and stick on the walls. It is very well suited for insulating a van and very well resistent to heat and moist. After this we cut new panels from thin plywood. These panels we stain and varnish. Then we can place them back using even more rivets. This is starting to look cosy! On the floor we place a dark short-haired carpet.

In the meantime we are searching for new front seats. We want to change them to more ergonomical once and we want to switch the single passenger seat to a double bench, allowing us to sit in front with three persons. Additional to this, we want to put them on swivel bases so that when we stay somewhere for a longer time, we can swivel them around to create more space and seats in our living room. It is not easy to find the right seats and swivel bases. In the end, Douwe ends up designing one himself for the double passenger bench. He lasercuts this in steal and connects it to the base frame to make it extremely safe. No, this is not formally allowed in the Netherlands, but we are very sure about the design. Next we install seatbelts, since the truck came without them and we would like to have them, specifically in the front. Interestingly, this is also not allowed formally, to add seatbelts if they are not here. Again, we feel safer with them.

Now we need seats in the back. First we close the sealing using wood. This gives the whole room a very cosy athmosphere. Then we weld the base of the benches out of steal, so we can connect them to the chassis and make it very firm. These frames we cover with wooden panels. Again, stained and varnished. We build slightly tilted backrests. Now this is starting to look like something! In the middel we make a beautiful wooden table, connected on a turnable and height-adjustable leg. We build the whole setup in a way that we can lower the table to make a double bed out of the whole cabin. To be able to be flexible or have guests around. We use a company to make cushions that fit exactly in both of the settings: As seats and as a bed. Now we just need the finishing touch! curtains, a bulletin board for photos at the back wall and lights. Now we have a cosy living room and dining area for 6-9 people!
